Carta apologética, probablemente de Francisco Combés sobre la controversia sobre el sermón de Francisco Solier en el que acusa a los frailes de maltratar de los indígenas

This letter discusses the sermon preached by Reverend Father Commissioner Fray Francisco Solier against Don Salvador Gómez de Espinosa. The speaker expresses reluctance to comment but feels compelled due to the seriousness of the offenses made in the sermon. They argue that it is inappropriate for a preacher to publicly insult an individual, particularly a fellow Catholic, from the pulpit. The speaker indicates that Solier's harsh words and accusations—calling Gómez an "infamer of priests" and an "enemy of the religious"—are grave missteps. They assert that such language violates established church protocols prohibiting personal attacks on Catholics. Moreover, they reference ecclesiastical sources to support their argument that the audacity of such proclamations constitutes a form of persecution against the church. This text is in the volume with the title "Pertenece al Aparador dentro de la Pared. Caxn No4. Missiones Legajo 1." / Historical papers and documents dealing with the Spanish missions in the Philippine Islands and East Asia. Comprises some 270 leaves, exclusive of blanks; original vellum binding lettered: “Pertenece al Aparador dentro de la Pared. Caxn No4. Missiones Legajo 1.”

Context Description
Folio 111-135a / N.d.n.p., but also concerned with the dispute between Fray Francisco Solier, O.F.M., and the Licentiate Don Salvador Gomez de Espinosa over the latter's Discurso Parenetico, published at Manila in 1657, which aroused great opposition among the friars, who were accused of mistreating the Filipinos. A ms. note in the margin of fl.115 ascribes this "Carta Apologetica" to the Jesuit, Francisco Combes: "De aqueste papel quien es el Autor pregunta Europa, el no es de proa ni popa, y asi sera de Combes." This attribution is probably correct, as Combes defended Espinosa from Solier's attacks, as can be seen from Jose Toribio Medina, La Imprenta de Manila (Santiago de Chile, 1896), pp. 51-52. Sotheby's catalog erroneously states that this "Carta Apologetica" deals with the martyrs of Japan, when in point of fact it relates to the controversy over Espinosa's Discurso Parenetico and the mistreatment of the Filipinos. The last lead, fl.139a, has an old numeration of 127 and 128. It is loose, torn in two, and badly needs repair, but only a few words of the text are actually missing.
