Monacillos que sean hijos de mestizos de sangley. 1732

The document outlines a series of communications involving Fray Pedro Orense, the parish priest of Malate, and local authorities regarding the provision of altar boys from the native and mestizo de Sangley communities. Fray Orense requests justification for the decree mandating these communities to supply children as altar boys, indicating that they only have a limited number of capable boys available. He highlights the difficulties faced by families due to the requirement, such as the risk of their children falling ill from long walks to church. The local authorities and village leaders present a petition stating that only a few children are available for this service and that the expectation to send children to church on Fridays and Saturdays places a significant burden on them, especially given the risks involved in traveling those distances. They are also concerned about the absence of their children during crucial farming times, which affects their livelihoods. Various decrees are issued in response to these petitions: the initial requests are reviewed, and it is determined that the obligations are just, but the church must ensure that all relevant communities contribute equitably to the service. The fiscal's observations and later decrees reflect the complexity of the situation, reaffirming the need for compliance while considering the hardships expressed by the communities involved. This text is in the volume with the title "Pertenece al Aparador dentro de la Pared. Caxn No 4. Missiones. Leg 2." Historical papers and documents concerned with the Spanish Missions in the Philippines and East Asia, Vol. II, in the 17th century. Continuation of the previous volume. "Folio 1-480 Collection of documents, c. 1650-1733, on land owned by the Augustinians in Luzon, including title-deeds, grants, donations, transfers, litigation over the same, and demarcation of boundaries, etc. Comprises over 500 leaves, but the numeration is very erratic and there are gaps, duplication, etc. Original vellum binding, lettered on the cover: “Pertenece al Aparador fuera de la Pared. Caxⁿ N° 9. Papeles de Tagalos. Legajo 4 y 5.” This codex forms a most valuable source for the study of the Augustinian land-holdings, and their administration of the Filipinos on their lands, in the period 1650-1730."
