En la ciudad de Manila, a prime-
ro de febrero de mil
seiscientos cuarenta
años, ante el Ilustrísimo Señor don
fray Hernando Guerrero, arzo-
bispo metropolitano de estas
islas Filipinas del Consejo de
Su Majestad, se leyó esta petición que
esto es el contenido:
Fray Alonso de Lara, religioso de la orden de nuestro padre San Agustín,
procurador general en esta provincia de Filipinas, digo que:
habiendo mandado Vuestra Señoría Ilustrísima por comisión particular
al maestro Joseph Cabral, beneficiado del partido de Balayan,
hiciese información de un milagro que la imagen de Nuestra
Señora de Casaysay obró con un sangley cristiano llamado
Juan Imbin, por haber tenido Vuestra Señoría Ilustrísima noticia del dicho
milagro por carta y testimonio del escribano público de la
jurisdicción y provincia de Balayan, que a Vuestra Señoría Ilustrísima remitió
el padre fray Alonso Rodríguez, religioso de mi orden y prior
del convento de Taal, en cuyo distrito y ministerio está el
pueblo de Casaysay e iglesia de la dicha imagen de Nuestra
Señora. Habiendo hecho la dicha información y estando
conclusa la remitió el dicho maestro Joseph Cabral a Vuestra Señoría.
Y de ella, y todos los autos contenidos en ella se dio trasla-
do al licenciado Francisco de la Roca, promotor fiscal para que
por parte de la iglesia alegase y pidiese todo aquello
que le pareciese convenir. Y por estar la dicha in-
formación jurídica y el milagro patentemente probado,
el dicho promotor fiscal respondió no tener qué alegar.
Y habiéndoseme dado traslado de todo por mandado de Vuestra Señoría
como a parte que soy, como procurador general de la orden
de Nuestro Padre Señor San Agustín en estas islas Filipinas, en cuyo distrito
y cargo de ministerio cae y está la iglesia e imagen de Nuestra
Señora de Casaysay.
Ante Vuestra Señoría Ilustrísima parezco y digo que la dicha información
de dicho milagro está conclusa y hecha conforme
a derecho, y así Vuestra Señoría debe llevar a debida ejecución

there should be an investigation of the miracle that our image of Our
Lady of Casaysay performed with a Christian Sangley named
Juan Imbin. Because Our Most Illustrious Lordship had received news of the said
miracle in a letter and by the testimony of the public scribe of the
jurisdiction and province of Balayan, which was sent to Our Most Holy Lordship
by Father Fray Alonso Rodríguez, religious person of my order and prior
of the convent of Tall, in whose district and ministry is
our town of Casaysay and the church of the said image of Our
Lady. Having produced the said investigation and having been
finished, Master Joseph Cabral sent it to Our Lordship.
And copies were made of of this one, and all of the declarations contained in it,
were sent to the Licentiate Francisco de la Roca, fiscal promoter so that
on behalf of the church he would allege and ask for anything that he
believe was fit. And because this investigation is
judicial and the miracle clearly evidenced,
the said fiscal promoter said that he had nothing to allege.
And having copied everything by the order of Our Lordship,
in my role as the General Counsel of the order
of Our Father Saint Augustine of these Philippine Islands, in whose district
and ministerial charge is and falls the church and the image of Our
Lady of Casaysay.
Before Our Most Illustrious Lord I appear and say that the said investigation
of the said miracle is closed and has been made according
to the rules. And so Our Lordship must appropriately execute

fervor se le pedirá auxilio y favor, y se puede entender que
los sangleyes que de antiguo, aún los infieles veneraban
esta santa imagen de Nuestra Señora de Casaysay, y por su devoción
se han convertido muchos e ídose a vivir cerca de su iglesia,
por su intercesión cesarán de la persecución que a las islas
hacen y vendrán en conocimiento verdadero de nuestra fe. La cual
declaración de dicho milagro parece será conveniente se haga
sin dilación; y Vuestra Señoría dé licencia para su publicación por los efec-
tos y resultancias arriba dichas. Por tanto:
A Vuestra Señoría Ilustrísima pido y suplico que conforme a lo dispuesto por
el Santo Concilio de Trento, declare el dicho milagro que Nuestra Señora de
Casaysay obró con Juan Imbin, sangley cristiano, por tal y dar
licencia para que se publique y celebre, que en ello recibirá mi
religión merced, y de ello se seguirán muchos efectos en
honra y gloria de Dios Nuestro Señor.

nations that are newly converted would fortify their faith
and would know the benefits and mercies that by the intercession
of the Most Holy Virgin are received by her devotees and the persons that
are entrusted to her. And regarding the said miracle
that she performed with a Sangley after the start of the
uprising and war of the Sangleys, which persists today with so much
perjury, injury, and undermining of these islands due to the many
burnings of towns and temples that the Sangley
keeps on causing with its army, the deaths of Spaniards
and natives, and the devastation of properties. And publishing
the [story of the] miracle, the faith of the Spaniards and natives, and
the hope in Our Lady of good deeds will be needed
and will grow during this war and with more
fervor [people] will ask for her assistance and favors. And it is understood that
the Sangleys of old times, even the heathens venerated
this holy image of Our Lady of Casaysay. And by their devotion
many have been converted and gone to live close to her church.
By her intersession the persecution of these islands will stop,
and they will come to the knowledge of our true faith. It
should be necessary that the declaration of the said miracle be made
without delay, and our Lordship give license for its publication for the
effects and results said above. Therefore:
To His Most Illustrious Lordship, I ask and beg that according to what was determined by
the Holy Council of Trent, he declare the said miracle of the Our Lady of
Casaysay performed with Juan Imbin, Christian Sangley, as such and give a
license to publish and celebrate it. Because in such deed, my
religion will receive mercy. And from that, there will be many effects that
give honor and glory to God Our Lord.
