En la Ciudad del Santísimo Nombre de Jesús a dos dias
del mes de mayo de mil
y seiscientos y veinte y cinco años su señoría reverendísima para más averiguación
y saber quien hurtó la cruz y cadena, y por los
autos parece estar Tomás esclavo del convento indiciado,
habiéndole su señoría reverendísima hecho algunas declara preguntas,
siempre anduvo [vacilando], y para que de
todo punto se dijese la verdad le mandó poner en
un potro de tormento con nueve cordeles, y se le requirió
dijese la verdad, y siendo preguntado si hurtó la cruz
y cuando: Dijo que es verdad que hurtó una cadenilla
con la cruz en el tabernáculo del niño, quitándosela
del pescuezo, y luego la empeñó a una india llamada
Isabel, y esta es la verdad.
Preguntado quién
le dio la llave dijo que el hermano Fray Martín le dio la llave
para abrir el tabernáculo un viernes para la misa
y que se dice de nombre de Jesús.
Preguntado diga la verdad que quien dijo la misa
el día que hurtó la cruz, dijo que el Padre Fray Alonso Clemente
y ésta es la verdad.
Preguntado que como le dio la cruz a la india
llamada Isabel, respondió que un esclavo del padre prior
llamado Jacinto, se la hurtó a este
declarante y este que declara [conoció] la dicha
cruz en poder de la dicha Isabel y se la quitó

records it appears that Tomás, slave of the convent, is suspected.
Having been asked some questions by his most reverend lordship,
Tomás was always [wavering]. To get him to
tell the whole truth, [his lordship] ordered [Tomás] to be placed on
a rack with nine cords, and he was required
to tell the truth. When asked if and when he stole the cross:
