La ciudad del Santísimo Nombre de Jesús a veinte y nueve días del mes
de abril de mill y seiscientos y veinte y cinco años.
Su señoría reverendísima
[del] señor obispo de Cebu Don Fray Pedro de Arce [usando] de la comisión
de nuestro padre provincial para hacer la averiguación sobre la
cruz que falta que fue la que se halló con el santísimo niño Jesús
hizo su señoría reverendísima parecer ante sí al Padre Fray Juan Ruiz prior del
convento de Cabcar del qual fue recibido juramento en forma
de derecho poniendo la mano en el pecho y lo hizo y
prometió de decir verdad. Y siendo preguntado dijo
que sabe este que declara que entre las joyas del niño
Jesús había una cruz de oro [Castilla] esmaltada de negro
que [era] la con que se halló el niño y que el Padre Fray Juan de Tujo,
cuando entregó la caja para se ir a capítulo, entregó
al Padre Fray Antonio Ximénez toda la caja, sacristía, y joyas etc.

entrego que está firmado de él y de los Padres Fray Juan
de Tujo y Fray Antonio Ximénez. Y ha oído este declarante
de pocos días a esta parte un esclavo del convento llamado Tomás
hurtó la dicha cruz y una cadenilla la cual cadenilla
se halló en poder de un Sangeley a quien el dicho Tomás la había
empeñado. Y por no tener entera noticia qué cruz era la
que faltaba, no se hiciese diligencias, entendiendo era pesar
de poca estima y valor, hasta que un dia yendo el Padre Fray Juan
de Ricovayo compañero de su señoría al convento le mostraron las
joyas del santísimo niño. Y [ha] oído como faltaba la cruz con que fue
hallado el santo niño y luego se fue a la iglesia para ver si la venía
puesta el niño como solía y no se halló. Que ha confesado el
dicho Tomás que la hurtó mientras capítulo, juntamente con
la cadenilla y parece ser así por haberse ido a curar
fuera del convento el Padre Fray Antonio Ximénez que quedó por vicario,
y este declarante haberse ido con su licencia

missing cross (the cross [originally] found with the most holy child Jesus).
His most reverend lordship made Padre Fray Juan Ruiz, prior of the
convent of Cabcar, appear before you and from [him] a legal oath was received,
placing his hand over his chest. He did this and
promised to speak the truth. Having been asked,
he said that this declarant knows that among the jewels of the child Jesus
was a [Spanish] golden cross enameled black
which was [the cross] with which the child was found. And that Padre Fray Juan de Tujo,
when he turned over the chest to go to the chapter assembly, turned over
to Padre Fray Antonio Ximénez the whole chest, sacristy, and jewels, etc.
of the holy child along with the missing cross as stated in the
registry signed by him and by Padres Fray Juan de Tujo and
Antonio Ximenez. And this declarant has heard
that a few days ago, a slave of the convent called Tomás
stole said cross and a necklace. The necklace
was found in the possession of a Sangley to whom said Tomás had
pawned [the item]. And without knowing that
it was the missing cross in, he did not undertake to report [the matter], thinking it was
of little worth and value until one day, when Padre Fray Juan de Ricovayo,
his lordship's colleague, came to the convent and was shown the
jewels of the most holy child. And he heard that the cross which had been found with the holy child was missing
and he later went to the church to see if it was
placed on the child as it usually was and did not find it. Said Tomás confessed
that he stole it during the chapter meeting, along with the necklace.
And it seems that way because Padre Fray Antonio Ximénez, who ended up as vicar, had gone
out of the convent to get cured.
And this declarant had himself gone with his permission
to entertain himself in Cabcar. And because of this the key of the holy child passed
