Reclaiming the Lost Archive of San Agustin Library

In the town of Pasig, jurisdiction of Tondo, on the twelfth day of March in the year one thousand six hundred and seventy-three, the following individuals appeared before myself and witnesses: Don Alonso Alvaro, Don Juan de Velasquez, and Don Agustin Pagauayan.

They declared themselves to be, respectively, the two executors and the heir of the late Don Sebastián Mangilog. As proof, they showed me a last will and testament in the Tagalog language. This will was drawn up before Don Juan Marlangysip Tanto notary of the governor of Pasig. I was not acquainted with this notary, thus they provided as witnesses: Don Juan Marlangysip Tanto himself and Don Atanacio de la Cruz Gatdola, chief prosecutor of Pasig. These two attested that they knew the grantors and that these grantors were known by the names that they had provided. This attestation was done in the presence of the Reverend Father Friar Carlos Bautista, presiding priest of Pasig, although the parties involved were all somewhat knowledgeable in our Castilian language. All three jointly, as one voice and with each speaking for all three, made this grant. And they expressly renounced the laws of joint liability, division, and exclusion, as prescribed therein.

They truly and effectively sell to father preacher Fray Juan de Vergara, prior of Pasig, a slave by the name of Juan Casta Malabar, a criollo of the household of Don Antonio Bolaca, principal of the town of Mandada a visita of Pasig, aged eighteen years, more or less. They sell him without declaring him to have any defect, or sickness, whether publicly known or undeclared, that he has or may have had, except that he is a slave possessed with proper title and captivity, subject to servitude, free from pledges, mortgages, or any other encumbrances, for the price of sixty-two pesos and four tomines. This amount has been paid to them in reales, for which they declared themselves satisfied and fully paid at their will. As the money was not physically present [at this moment], they waived the exception of pecunia, the laws of delivery, proof, and payment as contained therein, and, as legitimate sellers, they committed to warrant the said slave in such manner and form as is most

appropriate, according to the law and to the firm obligation of the property of the said deceased (i) authorizing the justices and judges of his majesty with this charge and (ii) renouncing of rights in general accordance with the law.
And thus, they made this grant in the presence of said reverend father. The witnesses were Pedro de la Cruz, Captain Don Augustin Hota, and Juan Talag. The said Don Alonso Alvaro and Don Augustin Pagauayan signed it. Don Juan de Veles said he did not know how to sign. Upon my request a witness from the aforementioned signed it on his behalf. Done as stated above = amended = pecunia = [valid]
