Context Description
Decrees relating to the commerce of the Philippine Islands. [Manila Galleon Trade, 1702]. 8 unnumbered preliminary leaves with a list of contents, followed by 175 unnumbered leaves and two unnumbered leaves. Folio. Original vellum. Some lines or words in Arabic writing on inside of vellum covers and on last leaf. Contrary to what is stated above heading to the list of contents in the Sotheby's Catalogue, these documents run from 1583, the majority being of the period 1620-1683. A list of them is given in the 8 preliminary leaves, and they are all transcribed in full. They can be described as key-documents for the study of the Manila Galleon trade between the Philippines and Mexico during the 17th century. As such, they form an invaluable supplement to the work of Antonio Jose Alvarez de Abreu, Extracto Historial (Madrid, 1736). The documents are not arranged in chronological order, but by rough categories, although answers to a given dispatch may be filed in another category. All these copies were made by order of the Governor Don Benito Carrasco in 1707.
