Carta del Padre Marcelo Francisco Mastrilli, sobre la conquista de Mindanao. Taytay, 1637

The letter from Father Marcelo Francisco Mastrilli to Father Juan de Salazar discusses the Spanish conquest of Mindanao in 1637. Mastrilli recounts the events of the campaign, describing the initial naval expedition, the challenges faced due to adverse weather, and encounters with hostile forces. He details the unyielding spirit of the soldiers, the significant provisions captured, and the strained but ultimately victorious efforts against the Moro forces, including the fall of their stronghold. Throughout the letter, Mastrilli reflects on the divine protection and guidance they experienced. He emphasizes the necessity for reinforcements to continue evangelizing the newly conquered areas and expresses hope for the spread of Christianity in Mindanao. The text concludes with a plea for more missionaries to support the spiritual growth in the region, highlighting the challenges of the local missionary work. Overall, Mastrilli frames the conquest as a miraculous and significant achievement for the Catholic mission in the Philippines. This text is in the volume with the title "Pertenece al Aparador dentro de la Pared. Caxn No 4. Missiones. Leg 2." Historical papers and documents concerned with the Spanish Missions in the Philippines and East Asia, Vol. II, in the 17th century. Continuation of the previous volume.

Context Description
Folio 1-20 / Dated at the end (fl.20 verso), Tay-Tay, 2 June 1637. This letter is in a copyist's hand, but it is signed with the autograph signature of Mastrilli, the famous Italian Jesuit who was martyred at Nagasaki later in the same year. I cannot recall another autograph of Mastrilli ever having been offered for sale. This document is therefore of exceptional value and should be carefully repaired (especially fl.20, which is torn across the signature) and rebound. The letter itself has been published from another copy which should be compared with this one, to see if there are any material differences. It is possible that the lengthy marginal additions on fls. 7 and 10 are also in Mastrilli's autograph, though referring to him in the third person. Cf. Streit-Dindinger, Bibliotheca Missionum, V, p.296.
